Jacob Rhodes's profile

HCC School of Fashion and Design

This is my M.Arch graduate thesis, a capstone project completed in nine months through vigorous integrated design. I explored details in landscape, reflected ceiling plans, large wall sections, structural models, and conceptual planning. While the building started out as a conceptually driven form, I was able to refine every aspect of my building through my nine months. Producing details in wall connections, faceted/angled connections of otherwise different materials, and a better understanding of circulation through and around my building have helped me to create something that is detail rich.

CONCEPT
Visual and physical circulation combined; the Reaction creates space and Hierarchy.
The red band that wraps the building is derived from the notion of a scarf wrapped around a neck. The “scarf” moves from the landscape, up the facade of the building, around the stair, and back down into the landscape. Through faceted/fractal paneling, the scarf creates visual circulation into and out of the building. Within, the stair and atrium define physical circulation, and the spaces that emanate from it into the surrounding and bonding landscape become the reaction.
